Arabic is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and originated in the Proto-Semitic languages of the Middle East in the 7th century.  

It is used daily by over 400 million people. On 18 December 1973, the United Nations recognised Arabic as one of six official UN languages, acknowledging its importance and widespread use worldwide. Since 2012, World Arabic Language Day has been celebrated every year on 18 December.
